Wang Jian (about 767-about 830) was a poet of the Tang Dynasty. This poem was written to describe Wang’s experience of travelling in a mountain in late Spring.
One day in late Spring, the poet was travelling alone in a remote mountain. It had been drizzling and he walked difficultly along a narrow winding trail. He forgot how long he had been on this meandering footpath. All of a sudden, he heard the crowing of roosters and he thought that he would be able to see someone at long last.
Sure enough he spotted a small village in the mountain col just opposite him. The village was located in a quiet and secluded place with a mountain stream flowing by swiftly. On the banks of thestream, thick groves of bamboo were rustling in a wind. Over the stream, the poet saw a single-plank bridge and beyond which a stone footpath leading to the village.
As he was about to enter the village, he heard two ladies talking to each other in a courtyard. One said:” let’s go and bathe the silkworm cocoons “. ( Note: aA method of selecting cocoons. People put cocoons in salty water and select those remain on the bottom and discard those floating ) The other answered:” let’s do that “. When he arrived at their doorway, he could find no one but a Cape jasmine tree full of pure-white blossoms in the middle of the courtyard. It was so peaceful everywhere. Suddenly he realized it was a busy farming season. Despite the rain for several days running, all men in this remote mountain village were out in the fields, eventhe housewives were too busy to be seen.
After reading this poem, readers may have a good idea of how busy farmers are in the Spring Season. During a rainy day in a remote mountain village, you cannot find an idle person, let alone farmers on the plain where there are more farm work to do.
