Lu You (1125-1210) was a patriotic poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. Lu was born in the early years of the Southern Song when the country was being invaded by the enemies from the north. As a child he was determined to recover the lost territories. Unfor tunately he did not have a chance until he was nearly fifty when he got a post at the frontline in Shaanxi Province. Unexpectedly, he found himself ordered to leave only six months later and transferred to serve in an idle post in Chengdu, Capital of Sichuan Province. While travelling to his new post, in northern Sichuan Province.
Lu was riding a donkey from afar, enduring the hardship of a long journey. He often drank wine to cheer himself up and over come travel fatigue. By the time when he reached the Sword-Gate pass, his clothes were dirty and wine-stained. It was getting-cloudy and a rain was soon to come. The poet was riding in a care-free manner along the winding trail, enjoying the scenery and chanting poems. He continued his journey in a drizzle and gradually he left the Pass behind.
As he continued to travel, he thought many famous ancient poets such as Li Bai and Du Pu liked drinking very much, and now with his wine-stained clothes, could he be regarded as a poet? Well, the answer must be affirmative, thought the poet. Nevertheless, despite the touch of humour in his lines, he felt lonesome and sentimental throughout this long journey because he would not have a chance again to fight for the recovery of the lost territories.
