The Shanglin Hostel is perhaps Beijing's most famous hutong courtyard hostel. It is a protected hutong building, with over 350 years of history, and is a main feature of any hutong tours around the Qianmen area. The Shanglin hostel is well-known for its colourful history. In the past, the hostel was a high-class socialising club for Beijing's rich elite. Traditional meals and drinks would be served, with live musicians and singers playing in the background. In the present day, paying tourists can visit the hostel to soak up the atmosphere of this historic courtyard with intricate wood carvings.

The Shanglin Hostel is now open for foreign guests to stay. The hostel welcomes all nationalities to enjoy the once in a lifetime experience of living in a historic Chinese setting. The hostel's location is extremely convenient for transportation, with Tiananmen Square being only 15 minutes walk away. Nowhere else in Beijing can you find such a great combination of traditional Chinese architecture at such a central location.
